"It's no surprise that a game called pickleball is still pretty obscure to the general public.

The name, which comes from the dog of the game's founders (his name was Pickles), might be holding back the sport, but it's actually picking up steam in Orange County and beyond.

Pickleball is played on a badminton-sized court (20feet wide and 22 feet long on each side), with a lowered, thigh-high badminton net.

The rules are similar to other tennis-type sports, but the game is played with a thick wiffle ball, which makes a loud "pop" sound every time it is struck with a paddle that looks like a cross between a personal wooden pizza peel and a ping-pong paddle."

"George and Janet Dillard bought a home in SaddleBrooke, a 55-and-older community in Tucson, Ariz., where they hoped to meet neighbors with common interests and enjoy the tranquility of the desert and mountain setting.

A fast-growing sport, pickleball is taking active-adult enclaves by storm.

WSJ's Anne Tergesen got a look at how the game is played.
But two years ago, a trio of "pickleball" courts were opened about 100 feet from the Dillards' property.

Their peaceful lives were disrupted, as was the harmony in SaddleBrooke.

The sport's wood and graphite rackets and plastic balls meant "there was a constant banging" when the courts were in use, often from morning until evening, says Mr. Dillard, a former insurance executive. "We had to take action."

Forget shrinking nest eggs or threats to Social Security. The hot topic in retirement communities today is pickleball."

Bainbridge Island, WA---The old badminton court is overgrown with weeds, tucked away in the woods on a remote island west of Seattle.

But this place is historical, having changed the lives of millions for five decades.

"People flocked in here," says Pickle-Ball co-founder Barney McCallum.

He and his buddy, the late Congressman Joel Pritchard, were hangin' out with their families in the summer of 1965...as they did just about every summer.

On a rainy day, Joel wanted the kids to go play outside.

"There was ping pong paddles. And a baseball sized whiffle ball. And he said go up and hit some balls on that court and get outta the house," McCallum recalls.

They did. And they didn't come back for hours.

Team regisration is underway. In order for your team to be eligible to compete, a minimum of three boys and three girls must register by June 7. League entry fee is $35 per player.

League play begins on June 26 (2010) at various sites in Port Townsend, Port Angeles, Sequim and Chimacum. Matches will be scheduled on a Thursday evening or Saturday afternoon and will run through July 21. Practices will be scheduled by the team manager.

2004: Port Ludlow Racquet Club

Membership in the Port Ludlow Racquet Club has grown very fast in the last three years and many of the new members live in South Bay. Perhaps PLA is not aware of the number of tennis players we currently have—60 who pay dues and belong to our Club—and that non-players, as well, feel misled by the advertising and promises that were made. `Passionate" players at Port Townsend tennis tournament -- Port Angeles Port Townsend Sequim Forks Jefferson County Clallam County Olympic Peninsula Daily NEWS:

PORT TOWNSEND -- For more than 40 years, the Port Townsend Tennis Tournament has drawn players from around Jefferson County to compete in three days of quality amateur tennis.

This year, the Labor Day weekend event (Saturday, Sunday and Monday) played host to aspiring entrants from all over Jefferson County.

It also included one player from Sequim and one from Port Angeles, both of whom were invited to compete.

A dozen participants went head to head in the men's singles competition, and 20 players were entered in doubles play.

The Jefferson County Community Tennis Association was started in 2007 to address the lack of tennis programming, the loss of the high school tennis team and the condition of public court facilities in our area. Indoor tennis clubs are an hour away, and local outdoor courts are at the stage that most need to be rebuilt. Starting a CTA was relatively easy, since there are so many resources available through the USTA Section offices, and other CTAs are willing to give advice, as well.

Port Townsend is a small historic seaport and arts community of about 10,000, with about 30,000 in Jefferson County. Even if your actual CTA membership is small, like ours, with creativity, motivation and a willingness to take the time to work together with community partners, you can accomplish more than you think. Since forming our CTA, we’ve been able to help resurface one set of courts at Fort Worden State Park, installed a backboard on another, and successfully advocated for a combined Port Townsend-Chimacum high school tennis team.
