In 2016 and 2017, the Port Townsend Pickleball Players had Painting Parties to create four courts on the Mountain View basketball courts. In July 2019, the Port Townsend Pickleball Club Serving East Jefferson County had a painting party at the Port Townsend High School Tennis Courts and created four pickleball courts. PT pickleball players take gold at State Senior Games

All five pickleball players from Port Townsend who took part in the Washington State Senior Games in Lakewood won gold medals in their respective age and skill divisions.

Lynn Pierle, one of the PT players, explained divisions with four or fewer entries went into a round robin format, while those with five or more entries were sorted into bracket play.

“Bracket play usually involves more games,” Pierle said. “The skill ranges from 3.0 to 5.0, with 5.0 being the 'pro' level, and they often combined skill levels.”

The State Senior Games' Pickleball Tournament ran Aug. 4-5, at Clover Park High School in Lakewood, with Pierle, Bob Bruns, Jeannie Ramsey, Rick Kelley and Doug Warren representing Port Townsend.

When asked what got her and her Port Townsend teammates into pickleball in the first place, Pierle credited the Mountain View YMCA playing an “instrumental” role in helping to grow the sport locally. (Read More)

All participants will need to go to the Y office at Mountain View and fill out a participant form and pay the program fee.

The Y programs provide insurance for adult participants 18 and older.

New Port Townsend High School Pickleball Court Facebook Live Streams

On his own, Port Townsend resident Mac Wheeler contacted the Port Townsend High School administration to borrow the school's industrial pressure washer. Two weeks ago, a small team of volunteer pickleball players cleaned the enclosed single tennis court. Last week, Mac made a pickleball court with yellow cloth court tape . The heavy duty tape is expected to last for about a year.

Equipment used for this Facebook Live stream video:

• Tripod compatible cell phone clamp
• UltraPod - Mini Tripod
• 14 foot ladder

Recording Issues

• Due to bright sunlight the cell phone screen was not visible during the recording.
• Facebook Live will only stream when the cell phone is vertical (not horizontal or landscape). The Ultrapod mini tripod had to be attached to the ladder with wire ties so the LG G3 cell phone could be held by the cell phone clamp in a vertical position.
• Half of the cell phone battery was drained after live streaming two games for 20 minutes.

This Facebook Live stream was recorded on a tripod at the same spot that the ladder was on.

USA PA Banner At Jefferson County Courthouse Tennis/Pickleball Courts

Yesterday, the USAPA banner was hung at the Jefferson County Courthouse Tennis/Pickleball Courts. Thanks to Matt Tyler, Manager Jefferson Parks and Recreation. The 4 foot vinyl banner will hang at the busy historical location until October.

Under the banner is a business card holder made from a plastic tennis ball container that directs interested individuals to this blog and conducting a Google search on "Port Townsend Pickleball".  These recycled information cylinders will also be at other county pickleball courts and gyms.

Notice the new yellow picklelball lines on the court that Mac Wheeler did last week.

Volunteers Clean Port Townsend High School Tennis Court

Yesterday, Mac Wheeler (blue shirt) organized a crew of volunteers that pressure washed the single fenced in tennis count at the Port Townsend High School.

This weekend orange heavy-duty court tape will be used to make lines for pickleball. The tape is expected to last a year.

Port Townsend Pickleball Play - Courthouse Courts

Due to beautiful weather (72 degrees) the location of the Sunday Port Townsend Pickleball Play was changed from the Rec Center to the Courthouse Courts. Although, we played with outside balls, the wind was a big factor during serves and rallies.


For the first time, we live streamed a couple of games using Facebook Live.

Pickleball: How To Modify A Tennis Count

The easiest way to modify a tennis court is to adjust the existing net and add one set of pickleball lines. On a standard tennis court, the net is 36 inches high at the center strap and 42 inches high at the either side post. The first step to conversion would be to lower the net down to 34 inches at the center. (A pickleball court is half the width, so the net height at the side lines is 36 inches.)



Once the net is the right height, pickleball lines can be added with chalk or paint, while still keeping the tennis court lines intact.

Turning one tennis court into one pickleball court is the easiest conversion, but it will leave a lot of unused space. A standard tennis court is 60 feet by 120 feet, and the minimum size of a pickleball court is 30 feet by 60 feet. Because of this size difference, one tennis court can be turned into two, or even four pickleball courts.

Jefferson County Courthouse court is a multi-use court for tennis and pickleball.

The tennis court was installed in the 1970s and had pickleball lines painted on it in 2012.

The Port Townsend Paddlers Play Sunday at 3:30 in the  Port Townsend Community and Senior Center Recreation Center Gym. A $3/per player goes towards the gym rental fee. Tourists and out-of-towners welcome.

2015 September Email Update

Hi tennis enthusiasts,

It’s been a wonderful summer for tennis in Port Townsend. Virtually every match met with sunshine! I want to thank the newbies to our club for turning out—especially for the folks driving in from Gardiner, Ludlow and Marrowstone. Great to have some new blood in the mix! And thanks to all my “old timer” friends for supporting this endeavor to bring the lonely PTHS courts back to life. 

Things have gone just as I hoped with good competitive matches with fun and friendly folks. 

Soon the weather will be affording fewer dry windows. Which brings me to question how feasible keeping our regular Sunday afternoon & Wednesday mornings will work? 

I will continue to schedule for those days for a while but expect some rain-outs and I may try to pull together matches on other weekdays so watch for that. I will also be gone at various times like at the end of September/start of October and then again in mid October for a week. 

We can consider leaving the regular time slots as non-scheduled (just show up and take your chances) times, and/or maybe someone else can step in and assist during times when I’m gone in the autumn. 

Your feedback is welcome! Somewhere around November, we will probably need to desist for the winter months. And I’m usually somewhere warm in January as I know many of you are! The weather will dictate our activities. Springtime should find us shaking off any creeping decrepitude and getting our bodies back in shape. 

Court cleaning update: I spoke with the superintendent again and now that the drought has eased, he thinks it’s a great idea to proceed but says not until the week after next earliest since school just got going. The labor is up to us but he has a high power pressure washer and enough hose and will meet us with the equip and turn things on for us when we arrange a time—time yet undecided. 

Personally, I have no experience with power washing and don’t know how many bodies are useful to have present to do the work. Several of you have already volunteered so let’s see another “show of hands”—and when you might be available. It will good to get this done (for the first time in more than a decade).

Who wants to sign up to play this Wednesday at 9? Forecast is sketchy but we might luck out. I’ll let the out-of-towners know if the court is dry by 8AM if it’s questionable.
